Recently, 31 students from Grades 9–12 came together for an honest, open minded conversation about what school really feels like, good stuff, tough stuff and and all the ideas to make it even better. Through small‑group discussions, they dove into wellness, inclusion, learning, and Truth & Reconciliation. Here is what they had to say.

Wellness check: Students reported positive friendships, belonging, and knowing where to get help. The red and yellow showed up around stress and balance, pointing to heavy workloads and pacing that sometimes feel too pressured.

Inclusion: Students shared that they want to find more ways to feel included and connected, while reducing behaviours that make others feel singled out or uncomfortable, and moments where concerns about wellbeing or inclusion aren’t taken seriously. Bringing students together through clubs, activities, and mentorship is of great value.

Truth & Reconciliation: Students want learning that is real, honest, and not limited to one day in September. They want to hear lived experiences, participate in meaningful activities, and learn throughout the whole school year.

Learning & classrooms: Students appreciate clear learning intentions, and hands on activities. They want to avoid having to do worksheets repeatedly. In addition to concerns shared about pressures of rushing through assignments and subjects, sometimes there are unclear learning expectations and intentions that result in unclear grading.
