Alternative learning strategies are working.
MHPSD’s Alternative Learning Team presented to the College of Alberta School Superintendents (CASS), articulating what it looks like when educators meet students where they are at and help them move forward with dignity, compassion, and expertise. This presentation is a powerful window into the evidence based strategies for de-escalation and intervention that are being deployed in MHPSD schools each day. This thoughtful work is being led by dedicated staff who understand complex needs, build trusting relationships, and design learning pathways that help students thrive.

The presentation highlights how MHPSD’s Alternative Learning Team provides targeted, responsive support for students with complex behavioural, emotional, and communication needs. It explains the team’s continuum of services—collaboration, consultation, and coaching—and shows how multidisciplinary expertise helps build staff capacity across schools. The video also demonstrates the team’s growing impact, with increasing referrals, school involvement, and evidence-informed practices that strengthen individualized programming for students.

We are grateful for MHPSD staff who show up with this level of skill and heart. The impact is real and reaches far beyond the classroom.
